Bucs Legend Remarks on Lorch’s Move to Sundowns
Former Orlando Pirates star Thembinkosi Lorch’s decision to join Mamelodi Sundowns was motivated by money.
That’s according to Bucs legend Steve Lekoelea, who commented on Lorch’s recent move to the reigning Premier Soccer League champions in an interview with a local soccer outlet on Tuesday, 30 January.
“It was always clear [that Lorch] wanted to move on, he wanted a new team to play for,” Lekoelea said of the 30-year-old attacking midfielder, who was previously embroiled in sexual assault-related matters. “I never thought he would leave Pirates for Sundowns, though, after the club helped him so much with his court cases.”
However, the 44-year-old reckons that Lorch’s move to Sundowns was purely for financial gain.
“Money might be one of the reasons he left Pirates for Sundowns, or maybe he feels he is no longer at the Pirates level,” he remarked. “But we have to be fair; as a player, you can’t eat loyalty.
“Clubs will say, ‘You are our legend’, but do nothing for you to show you are their legend. You will only keep the legend title. You have a gold medal at home, but you don’t have money. And I can’t eat that gold … we can’t blame [Lorch].”
